Session Type: Quick Talk
When: Wednesday, November 18th 2020 @ 2pm – 3pm
Abstract: COVID-19 has presented the opportunity to engage students in higher year level laboratory based subjects via ZOOM for the duration of the compulsory residential school. COVID-19 has impacted student attendance at compulsory residential schools due to border closures, sickness with COVID-19 like symptoms and caring for vulnerable people. Organic synthesis had to be delivered to a portion of the cohort via ZOOM – the ‘ZOOMERS’. The morale of the ‘ZOOMERS’ and considerations for how they could actively participate in the practical component was of great importance. A buddy system utilizing mobile phones and ipads in the lab paired up with a ZOOMER gave the best outcome for those attending virtually. We will discuss how staff and students designed ways to facilitate participation for virtual attendees seeking the best possible outcome under less than desirable circumstances. In addition we will highlight lessons learnt and adaption strategies for future need.
